Hello, everyone! I'm so happy to have you here with me. Feel free to explore every part of this site. But before you start, I want to share with you my journey from an ESL individual to now an ESL, English Literature, and Writing Professor and the root of this site. Read on to find out more.
My name is Soriya Te. I was born in Cambodia. At age 9, my family moved to the Bronx, New York, in 2003. I knew very little English when I came to the State. Due to poor English, I was placed in 3rd grade instead of 5th. As you can guess, I was the oldest among my classmates. The first year at P.S. 33 Timothy Dwight Elementary School was brutal. Not knowing how to complete the homework, I cried daily. It wasn't until the second year that I started to speak more English. That’s the year I grew my courage to speak English. Therefore, within one year, I became fluent.
In 2006, my family decided to move to California. They couldn't bear the freezing cold winter and the icy snow that came with its beauty and awe. Between 2006 - 2019, I moved from Long Beach to Los Angeles, Northern California specifically the Bay Area, followed by Dallas, Texas. In 2022, I was accepted to the Internship Program at Peralta Community College District. Upon the completion of my internship, I worked with Laney College, Merritt College, Skyline College, and now Cañada College. I am now based in the Bay Area. Whether you struggle with learning English as a Second Language, creating essay writing, or trying to understand and analyze English Literature, from my past personal learning experiences, I can easily relate and identify with your struggles.
The birth of this site came into existence from my driving force and passion for teaching the English language, English literature, and writing. I find the English language intriguing! Words are powerful. It can lift you up or bring you down. Exploring the reading content of each book, thinking critically, and analyzing the characters, motifs, symbols, themes, and the language use all contributes to the reader’s development and understanding the purpose of the author’s intention and the meaningful message underlaying the words. By applying our critical thinking and transferring our thoughts into words reveals to the readers of our own interpretations of the text. As you see, reading and writing go hand in hand. To improve writing, you must read a lot and allow yourself to express your individuality as a writer. If you want to improve your English language, as the old adage goes “Practice makes perfect.”
